📖 Research | 🧠 Brainstorming & Userflow | ✏️ Wireframes | 📱 Prototype
This group project was part of a design competition hosted by Adobe and Amazon (Creative Jam). Our challenge was to design an inclusive experience in a third-party mobile app for high school students looking for opportunities to fulfill community service hours or volunteer to help their local community, no matter what their background or ability. The final prototype received a honorable mention (Top 20 out of 400+ teams👑).
After our online research, we found many volunteer organizations. If a student wanted to a find suitable volunteer activity, they would have to visit multiple websites to find the information they were looking for. We also learned that the most common questions users asked were: What volunteer activities can high school students do? Where can high school students get information about volunteer opportunities?
Ideally, the goal was to build an app that benefits both volunteers and volunteer organizations, and bridges the gap between them. Volunteer organizations can publish their volunteer activities on the app while volunteers can filter the location and type of volunteer activity from a wide range of activities published by organizations. However, due to the competition time limitations, we focused on designing the project from the volunteer's perspective.
⋅ What would make high school students want to use our app? -- Add service transcript sharing feature/SM feature
⋅ What functions do high school students want in this app? -- Filter activities from all organizations
⋅ What should the design style of the app be? -- Playful
⋅ How to make the searching activities process easy and intuitive? -- Clear user flow
⋅ If we would introduce social media feature into the app, how far should we go? -- Add friends/check activities/share activities/direct message/comment
✓ Bridging the gap between would-be student volunteers looking to meet high school graduation requirements and the organizations in need of their help.
✓ The Give app features interactive maps for locating nearby volunteer opportunities, as well as a “volunteer tree” which grows taller with each completed activity.
✓ Users are able to connect and interact with friends, comment on posts, and join activities with others in their network.
✓ With the Give app, users will be able to filter activities by their service interest, view their upcoming volunteer calendar, save event info for later, and export their service hours to third party apps like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.
Based on the brainstorming and user flows, some wireframes were sketched up.
1-4: user go from dashboard -- friends screen -- check friends' activities -- register the same activity.
5-7: user go from find sceen -- check activities on the map(with filter) -- check activities on the list.
8: notification screen
This is the first time I participated in a UI/UX design competition outside of school. It was a valuable learning experience because I focused on doing research from a user's perspective in order to problem solve. I believe there is a real gap between the students and the volunteer organizations and an app like this could help integrate all the information and make the process easy and engaging. Overall it was an enjoyable experience working on this project!
